Our students are diverse learners, many of whom have traveled here with their families looking for a better life. Our class is in a Title 1 school and 100% of our students are living in poverty. My students often come to school in need of more than just academics.
They are a group of students who are eager to learn and love being at school-a place where they know they can count on their safety, security, and being loved.
My students are capable of great things-every day I tell them, "I expect excellence from you because I know that you are excellent!" Unfortunately, they don't always hear these things at home, so at school, we all work hard as a community to give each other respect and support. Every student can be successful when they are given the right environment and tools to do so!
My Project
My class loves to take charge of their own learning by using hands-on materials for learning. I am constantly finding new games and centers that make use of the limited supplies in our classroom, but we are ready to get more creative in our approach to geometry and spelling practice- and that means we need some new tools!
Creation requires students to use high-level, critical thinking skills.
The learning materials provided by this project will allow students to practice geometry be composing, decomposing, and manipulating shapes. They can also use tools such as Wikki Stix, trays, letter beads and pipe cleaners to build each individual angle, side, and vertex. Many of these tools can be used to create letters as well as shapes. This will differentiate spelling practice for ELL students and well as native English speakers as they practice creating each individual letter as well as whole words.
By supporting this project, you are supporting a hands-on and creative approach to learning about letters, words, and shapes. These skills are crucial for all students and this approach will level the playing field for all students.
