My Students
I have 24 funny, enthusiastic 1st-grade students who make coming to work an absolute joy. Our classroom is an inclusion classroom. I teach at a low-income, Title 1, priority school in East Providence, RI that has a tight-knit supportive community.
My students are all eager to learn, always proud of themselves and ready to make progress no matter what challenges they may face.
I'm always looking for new, fun, hands-on ways for my students to learn challenging, rigorous new concepts.
My Project
My students come to school every day ready to learn new reading, math and writing concepts. They are especially excited to use hands-on materials to practice and learn new math (lots of addition and subtraction) and reading concepts/standards. I find students are most engaged when they have the opportunity to use hands-on materials that make learning fun and interactive. We are a priority school in the state and our goal is to increase students' proficiency in English Language Arts and Math.
The reading and math materials are developmentally appropriate for students and will help to challenge those students that need enrichment opportunities and support closing gaps for struggling learners in reading and math.
Students will have the opportunity to use these hands-on materials (phonics puzzles, phonics stamps, addition and subtraction building and graphing) throughout their center rotations which will result in higher achievement in reading and math and greater engagement throughout the school day. While they are engaged and learning with these reading and math stamps and puzzles, I will have the opportunity to work in small groups with other students to close reading and math gaps. These reading and math games I have chosen will allow students to work with partners or independently on the specific reading skill they are working on: CVC words, digraphs, blends and magic E for reading and practicing spelling! Lots of hands-on materials and games for math will allow students to work on addition and subtraction to master important OA math standards! Having a strong foundation will help students throughout their schooling.
