Ms. Cassie from Worcester MA is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students engaging materials that allow them to match and identify sort numbers, colors, and shapes, as well as manipulatives to help them engage in fine motor skills and turn taking.
My students are in a substantially separate classroom that utilizes ABA methodology to teach academic skills, life skills, and behavioral strategies. All of the students are performing significantly below grade level and learn new skills through discrete trials and task analysis. They have very limited communication skills; most of them are non-verbal and those who are only have a handful of words that they use; one student is effectively using a PECs book to communicate. Six of my students have an autism diagnosis, and one has a diagnosis of Angelman syndrome.
Remote learning is very difficult for my students because they require a lot of 1:1 support during academic tasks, learn through discrete trials and task analysis, and do not yet have the skills to utilize a computer or navigate an online classroom.
My students learn best with access to visuals and manipulatives. Most of them are working on matching or identifying colors, numbers, shapes, letters, and their names. Others are working on attending to materials and readiness skills. They do not yet have the skills to read and write and require visuals to go along with words in order to increase their understanding of the material being presented.
My students use a lot of manipulatives when learning new skills. They do most of their work in a discrete trial format and also work on life skills and social skills. Much of what they do is matching and identifying colors, numbers, shapes, and letters. During social group they work on taking turns by playing a game. It is difficult to reach them through remote learning as many of them are working on attending to materials and people, and they do not yet have the skills to utilize a computer or tablet.
With these materials my students will be able to access the curriculum as it relates to their IEP goals.
