My students need an aquarium to run tests, a hydrographic globe to analyze ocean currents, a laptop, and ocean science instruments to measure the properties of sea water.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a hands-on, learning-by-doing science teacher. It is not about what I know- rather I have the challenging job of trying to figure out what my students know and are thinking. From that basis, I guide them in scientific inquiry and evidence based learning.
My students are high needs with big hearts.
Our population is diverse and minority groups comprise 96% of our school. Though our school is underfunded and has its challenges, my students have expressed a lot of gratitude for what they are learning in my classes. Their gratitude makes me want to work harder to give them the best education possible.
My Project
I teach biology and marine science. All of the materials I am requesting relate to doing science; for example, plankton nets, ocean models, a geobox for seafloor spreading, an ocean science kit with hydrometers, a hydrographic relief globe, tap water test kit, and a laptop. The laptop is to be used as a data work station for various experiments around the room. Ocean currents can be quite complex but one of the items would help me teach it in a much more memorable way is the hydrographic relief globe. This is a globe I can write on to model currents, sea floor spreading, tidal movements, and many other phenomenon. It also means, my students can draw on it as well. To test them on ocean currents, I simply have them draw on it and explain their drawings to me using the Ocean Globe. All of the materials I've requested have the same underlying purpose- to make learning more memorable and interesting.
Our school is big on feelings, but short on materials.
Though it's 2015, we do not have adequate supplies. These materials will provide meaning, context, and increase interest in science for my students. I love science and want all of my students to understand science. I also want to inspire my students to pursue careers in science and to see the possibilities available to them- these materials help me to provide inspiration.
