During school, there were so many times when myself and my fellow classmates would think, "I wish I understood why this works. I guess I'll just memorize it." I hope to change this in my class room, this year, with math manipulatives so my students understand why math works the way it does.
My students are eager learners who greatly enjoy math.
They enjoy calculation, math games, and shouting out answers. They attend a charter school in Indiana which serves a low-income/poverty demographic. My school aims to inspire our students academically and prepare them for a college education in the future. By equipping students with a conceptual understanding of math, I will be preparing them for all levels of mathematics in the future.
My Project
These resources will allow my students to interact with the material, see visual depictions of the math at work, and discover how math works on their own and in groups. It will allow students with all learning styles to learn at their own pace and in their own way.
I am specifically requesting manipulatives that work with place value, decimals, fractions, geometry, patterns, and measurement which address the majority of standards we will cover this year. Many of these resources can be used across themes. For example, one of the manipulatives requested, Cuisenaire rods, can be used for measurement, fractions, calculations, decimals, and geometry. These manipulatives will become a daily facet of my classroom.
By sponsoring this project you will be providing my students with the understanding of math which will help them develop a confidence that will help them excel in math from now and into the future.
This confidence and understanding are crucial to a student's academic development and investment in their educational future. Plus, these manipulatives will make math fun for my students!
