Hello Generous Donors,
Please help me to provide my students with a fun, exciting, and imaginative science experience! Allow me to introduce myself...I am a third-year 3rd grade teacher at Slonaker Academy. Slonaker is a public school in East San Jose in the Alum Rock School District. Slonaker students face many challenges, including low socio-economic status, language barriers, and low performance. My goal is to engage my students in what they are learning so they can learn to love education and become lifetime learners. And, hopefully, they will pass on their love of learning to others!
This can be very difficult at times due to tight budgets, limited resources, and scripted curriculum. In addition, 90% of my students are second language learners so I have to spend a great deal of my teaching time working on language development and math. There is not much time left in the day for hands-on learning of science and social studies.
Many of the students at Slonaker come from very poor families. Their families work very long and hard hours just to provide life's basic necessities (many of which most people take for granted). For most students, their only opportunity for seeing new places and learning about new things is at school. Due to state budget cutbacks, teachers are not given the funds needed to fund fieldtrips and other fun learning activities. Unfortunately at our school, the parents are unable to fund these activities as well. So, that is why I ask you for some help.
Please help me to help these wonderful 3rd grade students to have a fun and exciting science workshop at our school. “Mad Science of the Bay Area” provides a hands-on classroom program. Mad Scientist workshops spark imaginative learning, and kids these days just do not have the chance to use their imaginations enough! The program will come to our school and work with each class individually for one hour. The small class size (20 students per class) will allow students to have an opportunity to really interact with the science projects. Students learn about cells, the ecosystem, weather, bugs, optical illusions, and so much more. Oh, and the workshop meets California's 3rd grade science standards, too! By funding this proposal, you will provide all four 3rd grade classes at Slonaker the opportunity to have 1 hour of fun, exciting, and imaginative learning…a great deal!
I can guarantee that my students will remember and cherish the experience for a lifetime. Hands-on learning is so essential for second language learners. I appreciate your time and consideration and hope to hear from you soon! It's people like you who make our world a better place!
