Hands-On Literacy!

My students need 6 sets of literacy manipulatives tools including letters, reading rods, and sequencing cards to physically manipulate their comprehension and literacy lessons.

My Students

Do you remember how bored you were when your teacher simply told you the key points of his/her lesson? My scholars need to physically manipulate the key points of the lesson so that they can gain an understanding for themselves. They shouldn't have to take my word for it!

My scholars are all African American boys.

Their guardians have chosen for them to attend a charter school for boys that cater to their gender specific needs. Although they are of the lowest socio-economic standing in the country they are surrounded by the love and care of families that selected our school for them and a staff that work extended hours beyond other local public schools. The staff specializes in boy’s education. We understand that boys usually learn with hands-on projects or physical movement. They usually can't be told the lesson. Most often they have to physically feel the lesson in order to understand it.

My Project

A beach ball or inflated cube can make a world of difference! Instead of begrudgingly participating in a question and answer borderline lecture scholars are pulled into learning as they bounce the beach ball around. They are answering the same questions, but the beach ball makes it a game instead of a boring lesson. Likewise, scholars manipulate word cards and giant letters like game pieces. It becomes a fun activity for them simply because of the colorful “toys” they get to play with. The CD is also a type of game synonymous to Simon Says. Little do they know that they are gaining the tools to express the phonemes that are essential to building literacy skills as they mimic the silly sounds they hear.

Without the proper tools my scholars simply will not learn.

Research shows that most boys are hands-on learners. They become victims in a school system that can’t afford the tools and hands-on projects they need to learn. Our school was founded to combat the cycle of victimization suffered by African American boys in the city we service. In order to stay true to our mission, however, we need the proper tools.
