Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am starting a new life sciences program at a small, rural high school in an agricultural area of Marin County, California. Unique in the county, the student body represents rich, diverse heritages. They live far from one another in a very low-density district. After a year of Zoom, most of these students chose not to go back to in-person school last spring, so it's essential they feel like their classes are meaningful, engaging, and most of all fun. I am teaching biology, marine science, and AP Environmental Science, all with a strong emphasis on student-directed inquiry with lab experiments.

We are lucky to be in close proximity to creeks, beaches, intertidal areas, cattle rangelands and forests, where students get to learn science doing authentic field research.

These activities empower all students to see themselves as scientists, with the possibility to inspire them to make their world a better place!

Students will be conducting labs in biology to learn about RNA, DNA and protein synthesis. We will be carrying out simulations in natural selection with poker chips as well as transforming bacteria using plasmids.

Students are working on developing professional communication skills, and will be showing their data on large sticky easel pads, and also making posters of them using the markers, glue sticks, construction paper, and colored pencils.

Students also use art supplies to demonstrate understanding of science content through visual, conceptual models of various processes and phenomena.
