Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach in an inner-city school where the books are outdated, and we don't have the materials to teach the required lessons. This year, our district has given us very specific guidelines for teaching science. These guidelines do not line up with the materials we already have, so we are left on our own to creatively teach the concepts. We will begin studying the animal life-cycle soon. We have books, videos, etc to help us expose the students to the various stages of life. We would like for the kids to experience the life-cycle hands on, with monarch caterpillars and tadpoles that they can watch and nurture as they progress through life's phases. All third grade students in the school (about 40) would participate in this activity, each with their own caterpillar. This unit will foster responsibility, nurturing, caring, and more as the students learn the life cycle through genuine exposure.
