Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a school in a low socioeconomic area. They come to school each day eager to learn and full of energy! They are extremely ambitious and curious, always aspiring to do their personal best.
Despite facing many challenges daily, they have a deep desire to excel!
Their passion to achieve is contagious and they inspire me to work tirelessly as their futures are in my hands! I am grateful for each student who walks through my classroom door each day, because although some would say I am changing their lives, they are changing mine!
My Project
My second graders love to use their imaginations and create! One of the driving forces that motivates my students to utilize their critical thinking skills is hands-on activities. This year I plan to bring out the engineering and math skills of my students through the implementation of "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math" (STEM) activities. Having LEGO sets would be one of many tools that would help to enhance not only engineering and math skills, but more importantly, the imagination and critical thinking of my students.
My 2nd grade students will turn into real life engineers and use the "Creative LEGO Brick Sets" to take part in a building block structure challenge!
Students will work in teams to imagine, plan, and design free standing building block structures or towers that can support the weight of a tennis ball. Students will spend time working in teams and collaborating to discuss possible designs for their towers. They will then plan and create the towers in cooperative groups. Finally, they will test the tower and make improvements as needed. The team with the tallest free standing tower that supports the weight of a tennis ball will win the challenge.
The LEGO building block structure challenge is just one way that the LEGOs will be used throughout the year. Having these LEGO sets will provide students with endless opportunities to express themselves creatively all year long! I have some LEGO sets that I have bought for the class and my students absolutely love them! Please help me add more LEGO sets to our class to foster my students' love for designing and creating! Help me inspire engineers of the future!
