Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and lower socioeconomic lifestyles. Each child comes with their own life experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. They all want to feel successful, and every one of them brings the need and desire to learn.
They are curious, enthusiastic, and passionate.
They enjoy learning with their heart and soul. As a classroom family, students work together, learn from each other, and strive for personal goals of personal best.
My students are fourth-graders from an inner-city district. These students are proud, eager, and enthusiastic about becoming part of the larger world around them. Most live in small apartments or two or three-family homes, with little or no yard. They often are responsible for taking care of younger siblings, while having to do many household chores. Our school is a small, neighborhood school. We have very limited resources, including not having a library.
My Project
My students greatly enjoy hands on learning projects that are creative, busy and fun! Many lack the basic materials needed to adequately complete these fun and educational projects. They have spent the last year and a half sitting in front of computers learning. Now they are ready to create, explore and learn while having fun!
To learn by doing allows students to engage with the subject matter.
They remember what they learn by creating, exploring. It is a very motivating way to engage the students in higher order thinking skills.
My students need scissors, glue, colored pencils, markers and staplers to be able to create various types of book reports, interactive notebooks and books made from their own stories.
