Most of my children are from low-income families. Parents are working hard to break the cycle of poverty by enrolling their children in our Head Start program so they can continue with working or educating themselves through a G.E.D program or through college. Most families are living in low income based housing or with family members. They often worry about the next meal, proper clothing, and bills. At school, we want to help eliminate some of that worry by offering a safe, friendly, warm and inviting place for their child.
Our children come to school eager to learn, and learning is done through play in our classroom!
My Project
As the school year continues with remote learning, our materials are dwindling. Most of our children come from low-income families and caregivers don't have the opportunities to provide their children with the learning resources they need.
These materials will assist in helping our children learn while having fun and engaging with their families.
Families can use their creative skills to paint portraits with watercolors. They can use the dominoes to learn rhyming and letter sounds. Older children can use the dominoes to learn reading. I will make copies of the family involvement STEM cards and send a set to each family. With 52 cards, they can do one activity a week for a year (or more if they choose). The cards encourage families to work together, play together and learn together. I will send home one literacy card to each family. These cards encourage more than reading. They show families how to learn about parts of the book, do a picture walk though the book and evaluate the book. They can learn about literacy as a family.
