My Students

Where do I begin? I am one of the luckiest teachers on the planet. I have been teaching for the past 23 years, all teaching students with significant disabilities. We laugh a lot and learn a lot. The best thing I can say is to not underestimate my kids. They are incredible people. Unfortunately, the majority of my students live in low economic situations and are not able to get the necessary supplies needed for class. In my class, I teach students with disabilities ranging from autism, Down's Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy to significant cognitive disabilities.

Our school is in a very small community and therefore, the resources available for our students are limited.

Our parish was just hit with some pretty harsh cutbacks. This makes it very difficult to teach my students everything I aim to teach them.

We do a lot of hands-on learning in my class from cooking to cleaning; anything job and life skills related. Because of this, we are in constant need of supplies.

My Project

My students learn best by doing. That means, hands on activities whenever possible. With the items I have chosen , I feel that my students will get the best possible exposure to things that they may not get at home.

For the upcoming school year, we will be attempting to grow our own vegetables in our own garden, as well as making our own soaps.

By asking for garden tools, and soap kits, it is my hope that my students will be able to experience the activities first hand.

I am not only asking for garden tools, but also hand held drums for rhythm lessons. The love of music is very evident with my class.
