Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach both 7th and 8th grade science classes in rural South Carolina. I also teach STEM, an elective course designed to let students use science, technology, engineering, and math to solve problems. Sometimes, it is difficult to get my students engaged in learning, so I try to incorporate lots of hands-on activities and projects. In addition to science, I try to teach my students basic skills they need for academic success such as organization and study skills.

However, our school is a Title I school, which means many of our students live in poverty.

They lack basic supplies such as paper, pencils, colored pencils, etc. They do not have the means to provide extra supplies, so they are usually purchased by me. We need some new classroom supplies to provide the best educational experience I can for my students!

My Project

These materials will be very beneficial to my students by helping to engage students in real life and hands-on projects. Many of my students lack the opportunities for these experiences due to poverty.

Exposing them to possible careers in the STEM fields and giving them a chance to try these projects for themselves will be incredibly beneficial.

The students will be excited and engaged with these new materials. We will use these materials to build fan cars while we study Newton's Laws of Physics. The colored pencils will help students color code notes to build study skills and create diagrams to bring concepts to life. Finally, we will use the aquarium filter in a donated tank. I plan to put fish and other animals in there to help my 7th graders with their Organization of Living Systems unit.
