Help me give my students individual dry-erase whiteboards they can use to show their understanding of new vocabulary. As a Spanish immersion classroom, we focus on learning Latin and Greek roots that are useful in both languages.
This year I have a split 4th/5th-grade Spanish Immersion classroom. They are native English speakers whose parents have sought this alternative mode of elementary education to expand their horizons and possibilities as bilingual youngsters.
"This is an almost perfect class!" Last year's teacher always shared with her colleagues.
These students have come together as a family to cheer and rally for each other. However, I still need to differentiate their learning and offer them the appropriate materials to do so. In addition to academics, we explore music, food, and costumes of countries from all over the world that share Spanish as their native language.
My Project
These materials would allow my students to demonstrate their understanding. The individual dry-erase whiteboards will be used during Language Arts as students learn and practice Greek and Latin roots. During this learning, there is a three-part drill where students listen to the root they are leaning, they copied several times emphasizing the phonemic sounds and then they are able to identify other words that contain the same root figuring their meaning.
In addition, these boards can be used during math practice, science, and other subjects.
It is a simple, yet effective way for me, as a teacher, to get immediate feedback on whether a new concept has been understood or if additional practice is needed.
