I am a third grade teacher at a public school in Brooklyn, New York. This is a Title I school located in a lower socio-economic community where 93% of the children receive free breakfast and lunch every day.
One major focus in the third grade is math. This is the first year the children are required to take and pass a citywide exam in math in order to go to the next grade. One thing I am required to do every day is spend 75 minutes on math. This includes a variety of activities that must be completed. Some of these activities are a problem of the day, a mini-lesson, hands on work and a time that is allotted for math games and manipulatives. In order for a lot of these children to understand math concepts, visual aides and manipulatives are imperative. A large percentage of the children I teach come from homes where English is their second language. Because of this, their vocabulary is limited. In order to enhance their learning, manipulatives and hands on activities work very well. My supply is limited in my classroom. Since so much time very day is spent on math, it would be very helpful to have a broad range of these items to motivate the children to learn.
Lakeshore offers many of these wonderful items that would be used every, single day in my classroom. I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration and help purchasing some of these items. I know they will not go to waste!
