Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a public Montessori school in which our students start by learning practical life skills which they will use in everyday life. Our students are an amazing group of 3 to 6 year olds. They stay in our classroom for a three year cycle. The relationships that they develop are inspiring.
Our students come to us from an urban environment in which resources run scarce and teachers have to find imaginative ways to engage our students.
Most of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch; however they come to school eager to learn.
My Project
The Pink Tower, Brown Stair and Sand Paper Letters are iconic materials in the Montessori classroom.
Maria Montessori created these visually appealing and engaging materials to help refine the child’s senses in preparation for language and math.
Students love to build and explore with these fun and engaging works as early as 2.5 years old.
Stacking the Pink Tower cubes and Brown Stair prisms calls for visual discrimination, coordination, and precision. They prepare little hands for writing, as children need to use the 3-finger grip to carry the cubes and prisms.
Through language games, lots of new vocabulary is introduced to children such as cube, prism, large, small, thick, and thin. This new vocabulary enables the child to further explore the classroom environment encouraging the use of descriptive language.
The pink tower and brown stair prepare the mathematical mind by indirectly introducing the Decimal System as the child works with groups of 10. They also introduce Geometry, as they explore with the different cubes and prisms and their dimensions.
The direct purpose of the sandpaper letters is to teach children the sounds of the alphabet by means of muscular and visual memory. Children are encouraged to trace the symbol over and over again until the shape of the letter becomes a part of their muscle memory.
My students use these materials every day. Our Pink Tower and Brown Stair are old and need replacing. Our sandpaper letters hardly have any sandpaper left on them! I would love to provide my students with beautiful, new materials to fuel their love of learning
