My students need Jenga, Legos, books, and other hands-on games and materials to help with literacy skills. These games will help with reading comprehension.
In my classroom, I teach students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. It is my job to make reading fun but have the students learning at the same time. I set high expectations for my students and with this Donors Choose project their success will shine through.
These students struggle with reading and need small group extra support.
It is important to make reading fun, and not only through reading stories each week. Who would have thought simple games like Boggle and Jenga could improve comprehension, fluency, sentence structure, as well as, social communication. I am eager to use these materials in my classroom to have my students improve more and more each week! My students are determined to achieve their best and I know they can do it!
My Project
I am asking for Legos for students to use wipe-off markers to write words to "build" sentences in a tower-like structure. The Jenga will have comprehension questions on each tile which students will answer once they pull the tile. Classic games like Boggle, Connect 4, Chutes and Ladders, and others will encourage academics, problem solving, and critical thinking!
Although the materials will have educational basis, games will also encourage social communication and team work skills which students will need throughout their entire life.
I will encourage my students to use appropriate questioning, kind words and words of encouragement throughout the time we are together.
Some of my students also receive services for Occupational Therapy (OT); therefore, not only are the students benefiting socially and academically but physically as well. Some of these games need students to use their fine motor skills (picking up small objects) to manipulate the game.
When my students receive these donations, they will be ecstatic!
They will want to "play" the games but not realize they are learning at the same time. Their advanced social, physical and academic skills will change their lives for the better!
