Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With the immediate closure of schools across the country came lots of questions and grief, as educators began a new chapter in their careers, switching from an “old fashioned” way of teaching to that of a virtual world and thus, the hardest challenge.
As our school remains closed, I am facing a huge dilemma: how to replicate the functions of my classroom, without an actual classroom to call home.
In our classroom, my students spend the majority of their learning with manipulatives and different tools of teaching, engaging students visually and physically. Students become excited and actively engaged as they practice during the learning process. More often I choose to use these tools to get students excited to learn but it is also a great way to reach visual and tactile learners. These resources will mimic some learning centers the kids often explore in the classroom. As I am determined to create a classroom outside of school!
My Project
Currently, my students, all 21 of them, are experiencing a similar hardship, how to continue learning, in a virtual world. My students come from low economic environments, classifying us as a Title I school. Food comes before technology and the few supplies they had, have been left behind in the classroom.
As schools continue the lockdown, my hardest challenge has become creating a classroom outside of school, including how to get some manipulatives to continue our hands-on learning!
I have chosen two types of manipulatives that may be used in so many ways. Letters to create words, form sentences, and include accents used in our Spanish curriculum. Our math card games may be used with different game adaptations, improving math skills while engaging the whole family which provides that social emotional support within the family!
Thank you for taking the time in helping my students succeed in this new platform of learning. Technology is not readily available to my students, these resources are sure to close this gap during this time!
