The students who participate in my Learning Support classroom are a diverse group of students who have a wide range of interests and needs. This classroom serves students in grades K–5. Lessons are customized to meet individual learning needs, and are delivered through small group or one-on-one instructional opportunities.
The students in this classroom learn best through hands-on experiences that provide visual and sensory feedback.
They are curious learners who like to explore new ideas through concrete materials that help them make meaningful connections to the concepts that are presented during lessons.
Each of the items in this project provide sensory feedback to engage students in the learning process through sight, sound, movement and touch.
These tools will enable students in the learning support classroom to increase accuracy as they develop essential reading, writing, and math skills and connect to concepts in ways that are active and personally meaningful.
The WhisperPhones will support the students’ abilities to concentrate by eliminating distractions and providing clear auditory feedback. Students speak each word into WhisperPhones as they practice reading aloud, and receive feedback that is private and does not disturb neighbors. They can also use WhisperPhones during the editing stages of writing projects so they can hear their work read aloud.
The reading strips allow students to track print through color tinted windows as they read, which helps them maintain their focus and read more accurately.
The MagnaTab letter and number boards are tactile and make clicking sounds as students practice forming letters and numbers correctly. The boards are reset when the student traces back over the letters and numbers with their fingers, which provides feedback and is a motivating and fun way to practice writing.
