My first graders are a bundle of joy. They particularly love the hands-on curriculum we have at our school. I'm constantly impressed by their curious minds, eagerness to learn, and growth.
My students have grown exponentially in their social-emotional learning this year.
They practice kindness, respect, and community-building every day. I love noticing little acts of kindness I see between them when they don't know I'm watching. I also love seeing them grow in their ability to problem solve and empathize.
My Project
Hands-on supplies are a huge part of my classroom. We have manipulatives for math that make difficult abstract concepts more concrete. To help solidify phonics skills and sight words, we use letter chips, stamps, and more to give students a hands-on approach to word study. Our STEAM and Word Study centers house all the materials students need to bring their learning to life, but we're woefully lacking in storage and organization.
Effective hands-on learning requires the materials to be accessible to all in a coherent, organized manner.
We could really use an upgrade in this department. Something as simple as clear containers would really help my students be able to get their materials faster and get to the fun part - learning! Students will benefit from this project because when the classroom is disorganized, it is difficult for students to access the materials they need to learn in a hands-on manner.
