My Students
Vibrant, resilient and diverse would be the best words to describe my students. Our strong school spirit is built from students whose backgrounds couldn't be more different. When you think of elementary schools in Maine, you might not think diversity; you might not think of a school with students from all socioeconomic strata, from every race, and recently emigrated from just about every continent on the globe.
With 20 different languages represented, over 50% of our students receiving free or reduced price lunch, and a strong community feeling, we are the New Maine and it is wonderful.
Despite the sometimes difficult circumstances that our students bring to school: poverty, homelessness, trauma, we find ways to make our school a family where everyone belongs. One of the ways that students with all different language and literacy abilities can come together with a common purpose is through hands-on programming. Our cutting-edge library program encourages learning AND making through every means possible. We use print materials, puppet shows, online apps, toys, household objects, circuits, and performances to allow kids to follow their passions and express their creativity. Our students imagine themselves as future leaders in the arts, science, government, technology, and business.
My Project
Our PreK-5 school library program celebrates learning in all of its forms. We offer students opportunities to explore their interests through books, technology, and hands-on learning experiences. These Keva plank kits are materials that can be used for a wide variety of ages and purposes.
With these materials, we can teach about everything from the design process to collaboration to physics.
Our older students will have the choice to use these materials for their Genius Hour learning, as well as to reinforce physics concepts taught in science. Our younger students will use them for various building and design challenges, as well as free materials exploration during library "center" time.
