My students need literacy games/activities and STEM based learning materials to not only build their sight word, fluency practice but also to express themselves with hands on play.
As the new librarian of our school I see many eager faces throughout the day who are ready to read and learn when they come to library. Over half of our students come from diverse, high poverty and challenging home life's. Being a high poverty school, all of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
Many of the students who come to library have never played a board game or lack any supplies at home to create and express themselves.
Far too many of our students do not have access to books, or interactive learning materials to be able advance their reading level and confidence.
My students come to the library with their class weekly, excited to see what fun literacy games or reading activities we will be doing. They are always willing to learn, find new books, discover new ways to enjoy reading, and look forward to their next library day.
My Project
In our library, I run independent student centers. Students not only come to library for story time and book check-out, but they are able to participate in literacy, art, and STEM based centers. Most of my students are struggling readers, and need extra fluency and sight word practice. The Fairy Tales STEM kit will allow my older students the chance to be creative and problem solve using fairy tale classics. By adding in hands-on fluency, STEM, building and sight word games my students will have the chance to succeed.
This project will help my students not only learn to read and build fluency but also learn how to become creative thinkers and learners.
Having the opportunity to add in STEM literacy centers and hands-on STEM based engineering building centers will allow my students to become critical thinkers and prepare them for the future.
