Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a rough neighborhood of South El Monte where the majority of students come from high-poverty backgrounds. Ninety six percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch and many families live below poverty level. Our school is exposed to constant lockdowns since there is a high rate of criminal activity in the area. My goal is to provide my students with a safe learning environment where they are free to expressed themselves and their creativity. Our school has performed very poorly in state and district assessments year after year. I strongly believe that these low test scores are attributed to the lack of resources and services that are offered to our students.
My responsibility as an educator is to empower my students to succeed academically and to provide them with the skills needed to become productive members of our society.
With your help, my students will be able to close the achievement gap that exists between them and students from more privileged communities.
My Project
Help change the educational experience of underprivileged 5 year olds by giving them access to materials that they will use on a daily basis. My students will be using the sight word notebooks to express their ideas in writing and their creativity through illustrations.
The literacy and writing activities that would be funded are essentials in any kindergarten classroom.
By donating to our project, you would be providing my students with resources that will help them become better readers and writers. My students would use the Tower of Sight-Words Games and Leveled Sight-Word Practice Cards to improve their reading fluency. My students will use the CVC Word Work Center during small groups. This activity will improve their phonics skills while at the same time improving their social skills.
