I teach 18 three-, four-, and five-year old preschoolers in a head start special-ed blended classroom. My students are faced with many challenges, some being academic others being environmental. In my classroom, I try to adapt my lessons to the needs of my children. These adaptations range from materials used during the lesson to specialized seating at our carpet.
I want to create a classroom in which each child can be successful, whatever their needs may be.
For the majority of my students, my classroom is their first experience with school. As my students become more comfortable in the classroom, I see their interests beginning to spark, and they are looking for more concrete ways of learning. I want to help them with their learning through the use of additional manipulatives. With a wide variety of needs in the classroom, I'm looking to find materials that can be versatile and cover a range wide of content.
My Project
With the use of these materials, I can enhance how my students learn. I have watched my students in the classroom, and I have noted their areas of interest; two of the most popular being science and math. I want to continue to build on their interests by providing the students with more opportunities to grow and explore in these areas. I would also like to promote more student-directed learning opportunities.
These materials will allow my students to direct their learning more independently.
Besides independence, these materials also support social-emotional opportunities for my students. Each activity allows for two to three students at the same center. These opportunities for peer interaction will promote an awareness of others and help my students gain an understanding of the needs of others.
