My students attend school in a high poverty district in Binghamton, NY. All of my students are diagnosed with autism, and as a result, require a classroom designed to meet their individual needs. We strive to ensure that school is consistent, welcoming, and a happy, fun place to learn.
The students in my classroom are creative, active, and excited to learn.
They love to dance, read, and play together. Because of their diagnosis, they sometimes have to work a little harder than their typical peers to meet their goals. As their teacher, it's my job to help them not only become successful students, but to foster a lifelong love of learning, both inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
In our fast-paced and ever-changing technological world, we need to encourage the students of today to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow. Though my students all love technology and the excitement and convenience it brings, they are getting fewer and fewer opportunities to work and learn with their hands. I am hoping to give my students the chance to create and build with STEM-centered activities and toys.
Not only does STEM foster problem-solving, resilience, and creativity, but it also encourages teamwork and communication - an especially important part of teaching students with autism.
In addition to these skills, the STEM materials I have requested will also build fine motor skills and facilitate hands-on learning in a way that is engaging and exciting for my students.
I have already seen the pride and excitement STEM activities have brought to my students when they are able to bring their ideas to life. I would love to be able to incorporate more of these activities into our day to help students become the makers and creators of tomorrow.
