Special needs individuals are just that--special. I learn so much from these kindergarten through fifth grade kids, because they often think differently than their typical peers. They see the world differently. They bring me back to the basics and help me see the beauty of the world. For instance, one of my kids loves farm animals, especially cows. Even though he is non-verbal, he has let me see the beauty of cows.
My students love to learn in unique ways.
Some of the best learning experiences have been when we explore their world. We have discovered how fidget cubes work by taking it apart and putting it back together. We find ways to apply math, writing, and reading in our discoveries. For instance, we found that numbered bus lines make a fun game spot as we run back and forth finding numbers to solve problems together.
Most of these children come from lower income families, but that doesn't stop them from learning. These students not only learn the traditional subject matters, but they also learn social skills, life skills, and citizenship skills that help them be successful in life. I am constantly inspired by each of my students.
My Project
I have students from all different grade levels. This makes our classroom fun and exciting, but it also leads to difficulties providing grade appropriate reading learning to all of my students. Our class currently relies on worksheets to provide this diverse learning. With your help, I hope to use hands-on learning to help our students better understand letter combinations and letter patterns.
Hands-on learning helps students learn more concretely.
The alphabet lacing cards will help our younger students increase their motor skills, while learning their alphabet. The different board games will encourage all students to recognize letters and different letter patterns they need to build words. The word context game will help our higher level readers learn comprehension to increase fluency. All of these items will help my students find reading more fun, as they use their hands to learn.
