Help me give my students hands-on learning and tools to make classroom materials.
Pete the Cat books and the Pete the Cat stuffed animal are of high interest and on my students wish list!
My students have multiple and severe disabilities that affect their life in many ways. Diagnosis ranges from Intellectual Disabilities to Autism, Down Syndrome, Speech Impairment, Visual Impairment, and Deafness or Auditory Impairment. Some also have Medical conditions that also offer challenges. Often they experience many combined conditions that affect gross motor, fine motor, speech, sensory processing, and social skills along with others.
Providing and making materials for them to learn in ways that are meaningful to them is challenging and requires items that aren't on a back-tp-school supply list.
My greatest challenge is providing meaningful, hands-on, multi-sensory learning opportunities that target all areas of my students' lives. My classroom team and I love making classroom learning that builds academic knowledge as well as develops skills that connect such a unique population of students to the Real-World and lifelong skills!
My Project
One of the challenges of teaching children with multiple and severe disabilities is creating hands-on learning materials from the curriculum. Tools like a specialized laminator that can produce file folder games and larger than typical classroom materials and an electric pencil sharpener are highly needed.
Our students are highly interested in Pete the Cat and have asked for books and a Pete the Cat stuffed doll for Literacy Circle.
Another challenge is to make learning tasks reach multiple goals at the same time such as literacy and STEM with Fine Motor. Building high interest robots and cars can engage students in using many areas at once.
