Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a mission to bring out the best in my students. My students have challenges that often severely interfere with academic success. I have the opportunity to use interactive software (Unique) that can bring out academic success.
My students are 6th graders diagnosed with Autism in a Title-1 public school.
All of my students qualify for free / reduced lunch and many are non-verbal. All of my students are with me all day so that they can have the one on one and individual support needed to be successful.
My Project
In addition to a special education teacher, I am a music therapist and use music daily to reinforce socialization and academic objectives. However, I would love to use interactive technology more frequently in a personal way. I have the opportunity to use Unique and other interactive software that focuses on all academic areas, but do not have a smart board or a touch screen computer. Since many of my students are non-verbal, the iPad would promote communication and interaction - which is often challenging for students with Autism.
My students need an iPad and a set of headphones in order to regularly and actively engage in the Unique interactive software lessons.
The iPad would directly improve my students lives and the quality of my lessons by providing interactive communication and academic lessons. The students could touch pictures to indicate their needs / wants and I could digitally change scenarios quickly and efficiently. I will also have lessons programmed into their daily routine.
