Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the key goals of our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) learning community is to prepare students for success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). We strive for a balance between academic skills based on Common Core standards and social, emotional, and motor skills development based on Early Childhood learning guidelines like the California Preschool Foundations.

We have a very active TK in an urban school district.

My students are primarily English Language Learners. We are part of a fairly high achieving Title I school in a community where most students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch programs. The TK program in California is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between preschool and the Kindergarten academic program.

In addition to academics, the students need to learn social and emotional skills to help them be ready for the rigor in K-12. They also are getting a solid foundation in language arts and math.

My Project

While our TK students are ready to be inspired to be the designers, coders, and engineers of tomorrow, they will be best motivated with the right resources at hand. Researchers agree that at this age and development they benefit by technology that is more hands-on and not just plain "screentime" or entertainment.

Osmo gives a hands-on creative, discovery focus to our whole curriculum and will fit in well with the rest of our resources.

Through carefully designed learning experiences they will have a foundation for the kind of deep thinking needed with the NGSS. By integrating engaging manipulatives with iPads we can have a truly hybrid approach to technology. These kinds of learning experiences help them experience science and engineering.
