Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to class full of energy, excitement, and desire to learn. Whether it be creating early human cave paintings, crawling across the floor pretending it is the Sahara desert, or participating in a debate on the ethical implications of Columbus Day. My students are critical thinkers who love to be presented with multiple perspectives. Some favorite moments of mine this year include students "becoming" various Greek mythical and historical figures and presenting "I am..." speeches. Their attention to detail and effort is amazing!
Growing up in an urban community means that my students face additional challenges, but it also means that they possess inherent strength and can grow to be passionate advocates for change!
I believe that it is my job as their teacher to provide them with as many enriching opportunities in our classroom as possible. This allows them to see not only what needs to be changed in our world, but also what is beautiful about our world.
My Project
My classroom philosophy is deeply rooted in the value of experiential learning. Since taking 200 students around the world would be a challenge, I strive to create opportunities for students to interact with history on multiple levels that bring the cultures we are reading about to life.
Experiencing history through multi-media projects and simulations creates authentic engagement and deepens understanding.
These supplies will be used for a variety of intentionally designed learning experiences. First, my 6th grade kiddos will experience an early humans cave painting day. The lights will dim, students will use outlines of animals, charcoal, and pastels to draft images on large butcher paper sheets to turn our room into the Lascaux caves. My 7th graders will then experience Japanese culture day in which they will learn about the cultural significance of origami, have opportunities to create their own origami, and use chopsticks to try pick up grains of rice. Additional supplies will be used for other art projects throughout the school year. These opportunities will enhance all of my students' understanding in ways that simply reading and analyzing cannot do alone.
