My students need hands-on learning materials to help them understand and master the necessary math skills they need for future learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Were you one of the students who learned best by doing rather than listening to the directions and watching someone else show you how to do something? My students are just those kinds of learners, and I want to help them gain the basic math skills necessary to succeed in life.
I teach at a high poverty inner -city school.
Over 99% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and free breakfast is available to all students who come through the door each morning. Most students come to school on the first day with little to no school supplies. Many of them don't have a loving and caring support system at home. Those that do often have parents that don't have the time or the skills to help them at home. My fourth graders are great kids. They just need a little more help than others. I teach math and science to a group of kids who have a wide range of learning capabilities. Some have physical disabilities, some have varying levels of learning disabilities, and some just need a little extra help with certain concepts, especially in math.
To aid me in helping all of my students become successful, I am requesting two Meet the Common Core Math Standards Learning Centers. These centers will allow each student hands-on practice with each of the standards. Hands-on learning is vital to understanding math concepts, especially for my exceptional learners. My students will not only gain a deeper understanding of the concepts, but they will be able to use these concepts in real-life scenarios. The centers will also allow me the opportunity to split the class into groups so that I can give more individualized instruction to those who need it the most. The students will be to work at their own pace, on concepts that they need to work on themselves, not just what the whole class is learning. They will have hands-on practice to better their understanding of multiplication and division, fractions, place value, geometry, and measurement so that they can become more critical thinkers.
Your support on this project is vital to helping these exceptional learners succeed.
You will be helping them garner the lifelong skills they need to become productive members of society. Please help me help the students who would otherwise struggle throughout their educational career and quite possibly the rest of their lives. My goal is to give them the skills and confidence to be anything they wish to be in this life.
