Hands on Geometry

My students need 17 material kits to use to explore the properties of angles and polygons, which will allow my students to discover and practice the properties of geometry.

My Students

Think back. Which kind of math did you dislike? For most, the answer is Geometry. Geometry seems to be the least favorite topic in mathematics, usually because of its many abstract rules and formulas.

My students are quite varied.

Since our district closed two schools last year, and students were distributed throughout the district, we have a mix of low income (even homeless), English Learners, students from middle class families, and those who afford after school tutoring. We have discovered that even our students with the advantage of tutoring, lack hands on experience and rely solely on memorization.

My Project

I learned about these amazing math manipulatives called "Anglegs" through 60 hours of math training this summer. Even after years of teaching, I was amazed at how I was able to use these materials to have students explore properties of angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and so on. We were able to physically discover WHY the rules of geometry exist. For example: the sum of two sides of a triangle must be greater than the third. The materials are also incredibly helpful for developing students spatial ability, including rotations, tessellations, etc. To a math teacher, these are the best teaching item available!

My hope is to inspire my students to continue on to higher mathematics.

So many learn only the processes, or formulas, and then their understanding falls apart at the junior high school level. Students will have a deeper understanding of geometry because of explorations with these materials. Better understanding usually leads to students enjoying math more. Thank you very much for your consideration!
