My students come from a variety of cultures and have different levels of science skills. There are over twenty languages spoken at my school, but science can become a common language for all my scientists-in-training. The school is part of the International Baccalaureate program, which seeks to integrate multiple disciplines in order to provide a holistic learning environment for all students.
My monthly budget to plan science activities, labs, and projects is $0.50 per student.
This fact makes it difficult to plan satisfying, hands-on activities which engage all students and foster their love for learning. Any help received through this website would ensure students are exposed to multiple, true learning opportunities which introduce students to STEAM - science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
My Project
We are requesting hands-on genetics experiences through labs and hands-on activities. The Heredity of Human Traits, Genetics Detectives, and Introduction to Mendelian Genetics lab kits requested through this project will add a much-needed hands-on component to the Genes and Heredity section of the Evolution: Change over Time unit.
My students start the unit by learning about fossils and how our planet and its inhabitants changed over time.
The follow this section up by learning about the role genes and heredity play in the way all living things of the planet look like today.
With your help, the materials requested will help students see the beauty of genetics with labs that are able to engage them.
Students will get to see heredity work in blood types, research the phenotype and genotype of a sample group, and apply their knowledge to complete labs.
