My students need a variety of vocabulary and language learning games to enhance their receptive and expressive language skills needed to succeed in school.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember how fun playing games was? My students love games and some new, fun, hands-on games that focus on a variety of language skills is just what they need to learn and succeed in school.
I am a Speech and Language Pathologist who provides services to over 65 children at three different inner city elementary schools in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
I provide services to children in grades Pre K-6 who have a wide range of disabilities, including autism, Down Syndrome, articulation and phonological disorders, and language and auditory processing delays.
As a traveling Speech therapist with an extremely large caseload, I am unable to work with my students or the staff at each school on a daily basis. Since I have to travel from school to school, I need to carry my limited number of materials with me at all times so that each school can have access to the games and materials that I have. The children I service really need daily enrichment in functional language skills such as vocabulary building, asking and answering questions, reading comprehension and retell, as well as following directions.
My Project
My project is requesting a variety of language games and hands-on activities that I can place in "language learning bags" and use during my therapy lessons and then leave at my schools so that any student or staff member can have access to them on a daily basis.
The bags will include games that focus on vocabulary, reading comprehension, sequencing, written expression etc. Teachers can sign out the language bag for a particular child or for their entire classroom. This will help reinforce and continue to work on the language skills I teach in therapy. The children I service need daily practice in language and this project will allow teachers to carryover and work on language with them when I am not there.
This project will help over 65 speech and language delayed students (in addition to the regular education students at each school) work on their communication and language skills needed to succeed with the curriculum in the classroom.
Each school will have some fun, interactive language games that can be used year after year.
