Hands-on for Virtual Learners

My Students

I have been teaching now for 14 years and just recently made the move to work at a virtual school. Every time I make a child smile I am making their day brighter, which makes me feel good inside. It also breaks my heart that many of them have not had the opportunity to be exposed to the simplest activity due to COVID and learning online. Those days consist of having a special treat for no reason, getting to play a game with their peers, doing a hands-on craft with their teacher, doing an art project, having their own personal materials, and the list goes on.

Many of my students come from families of broken homes, living with grandparents, foster children, single-parent homes, homeless families, or both parents must work.

Many of my families struggle to expose their children just within education. My school is 60% English Language Learners and 85% of the school is low-income. Though our families struggle, they do their best in helping their child by reaching out to the school. We offer help through online resources or materials they can purchase at the store.

My Project

These hands-on manipulatives will help my students practice and master representing numbers 0-20 (K.CC.A.2), write numbers 0-20 (K.CC.A.3), count to answer how many? (K.CC.B5), represent addition and subtraction with objects (K.OA.A1), compose and decompose numbers 11-19 into tens and ones (K.NBT.A1), correctly name shapes (K.G.A.2), and compose simple shapes to form larger shapes (K.G.B.6).

Having hands-on manipulatives will help my students in discussing their math thinking, encourages them to ask questions, find different ways to solve problems, and helps them to demonstrate their new knowledge and skills.

We become a better learner when we have hands-on materials to manipulative with.
