I teach in a K-8 New York City School. Many students have been with the same students since Kindergarten. Most of my students have younger siblings in the same school for which they help take care of after school. They not only have school responsibilities but have home responsibilities as well.
My students are fully engaged when they learn through hands on activities.
Many of my students lack the chance to get materials from home and rely on the school to provide materials.
I am a healthy education teacher and I love giving my students the resources and tools to be successful in their overall health and wellness. My students are creative, interested, and full of questions! I am truly lucky to have such a great group of students each year.
My Project
Many of my students learn best through hands on experiences and visual aids. By including the MyPlate foods into station learning it will allow students to see portion control.
My students will be able to visually see how food is measured and compare that to the portions that they eat.
When we look at food labels and see calories, fat, and fiber we also need to look at how much a serving size is. Many students don't realize that the serving size is not an entire bag of chips. By having the MyPlate portions they will visually be able to see what a proper serving size is.
By donating to this project, you will be increasing student engagement and help students that learn in more visual and hands on ways. These materials will be used through out the entire nutrition unit in various activities to show portion control and how to create healthy meals.
