I teach French at Andrew Jackson Language Academy in Chicago. I teach levels Kindergarten through 8th grade. I see the same ten to thirteen students year after year ?a potential of nine years.
My classroom is a fun and engaging atmosphere. With my Kindergarten through 2nd grade students, I use a mix of games, songs, arts & crafts and movement and drama ?all of course, in French. I make as many hands-on tools as a possibly can ?cards and charts with vocabulary words, concentration decks, Bingo boards; however, I would love more games and physical items for encouraging my students to speak French.
It would be useful for me to have an array of objects in my classroom to promote total physical response. Currently, I have approximately twenty play plastic fruits and vegetables. I would like to have a complete French breakfast set, a lunch set, and a dinner set. In addition, I teach my students about animals. It would be useful to have a flannel object board. My young learners love to play games, such as “Moi, moi, moi.?First, I ask the students, “Qu'est-ce que c'est?,?and they raise their hands and respond with the objects name, for example, “L'orange.?I hand that student the object and say, “Je te donne l'orange.?(I am giving you the orange). I continue until every student has an object. We can play several games. Their current favorite is entitled “Moi, moi, moi.?I ask, “Qui a l'orange??(Who has the orange?). The student who has the orange responds with “Moi, moi, moi,?to the tune of Beethoven's 5th. Eventually, the students become the teacher and ask the question, “Qui a l'orange.?
I also have several number Bingo boards in my room. I would like to have a few TPR Bingo boards. These games work differently than regular number Bingo ?they are not a straight number game, rather they are objects. I call out a direction in French, such as “L'homme est a la porte.?(The man is at the door). The students listen to the sentence and search for a matching picture of the key words (man or door). If they have it, they cover it with a chip. This method helps the students internalize comprehension.
