Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For as long as I can remember, I come across adults who inevitably tell me the worst thing about school is Math. This is something that I could never understand but has driven me to be a math teacher and coach. As I talk with people, Algebra seems to be the leading factor in those memories.
Algebra does not have to be scary or overwhelming.
It is important that our kids have not just a conceptual understanding of math but also the belief in themselves that they can learn and excel. My experience with Hands-on-Equations has shown me that this is possible. The method of showing algebraic concepts in such a basic manner leaves students believing that it isn't too difficult. Students build on their successes with each lesson until they find they have mastered multi-step equations.
My students struggle more with believing they can learn than with the actual skills. I can not express how exciting and rewarding it is to see students' faces light up when they realize that they have conquered the first steps of algebra. They develop a sense of pride that carries them through to the next skill and the one after that. You can help build that foundation.
