Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a sweet group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in the heart of Los Angeles. We are a Title I school with most of my students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. They are an amazing group of learners with special needs ranging from having mild Autism to processing disorders to health impairments due to brain issues.
They range in ability from three years below level to almost reaching grade level.
They are well loved but need so much more love and support and encouragement! They can succeed, they just need extra time and extra resources above and beyond what I or my school is able to provide.
My Project
In today's 21st century world, students need number sense. What better way to provide number sense than with hands-on manipulative and Daily Math Routines. I have been teaching for 15 years and the most growth I have seen with students across all subjects is in the daily routines. My favorite kit for a long time was the Daily Math Routines because it had hands- on materials and it encompassed all of the standards students needed. We didn't just learn something and move on, we'd come back to it throughout the year.
I want to give my current group of students those same tools and that same experience.
With the materials we have, we have been able to put together make shift daily routines. If we had an ETA hand2hand kit, we could take our learning to the next level.
