My students need Kindle Fire tablets and programmable robots to help them explore coding and computer science through hands-on and collaborative activities.
I teach STEM Math at a small off-site program for students in grades K-8 with autism and other developmental or physical disabilities. Some of our students live in foster care or come from families struggling with poverty, and all of our families deal with the challenges of raising a child with special needs. Our school community makes a special effort to enrich our students' lives and provide them with opportunities that they may not have access to outside of school.
Our students thrive in a hands-on learning environment.
Our school community is committed to educating the whole child and to providing our students with the same opportunities that they would have in a general education setting. Our school implements instructional practices geared to the individualized achievement of students' social, emotional, and academic goals.
My Project
My students need materials that will help them to learn about coding and computer science in a hands-on way. This year, I have started teaching coding in my STEM Math classes using free resources and a few materials that I was able to create or purchase myself. I am hoping to be able to get more resources to be able to help more of my students explore coding and robotics. Many of my classrooms have limited access to computers and tablets, so I am asking for two Fire tablets with cases that will help me to put coding apps into the hands of more students and give them more opportunities to explore coding first hand. I am also asking for a variety of robots that students can program by writing their own code, including a Bee-Bot, a Dash robot, Botley, and Code & Go Robot Mice, as well as a kit of math tools to help incorporate math skills into coding lessons. Using these robots will help my students to learn how to code in different ways, encounter a wider variety of coding systems and problems, and will give me enough materials to provide access for all students, even in my largest classes, to personally work hands-on with coding.
Learning coding will help my students better understand the technology they use every day and interact with technology in a more meaningful way.
Through coding, my students will learn to think logically, solve problems, and work collaboratively with their classmates. For many of my students who struggle in traditional math classes, learning coding gives them a chance to be successful in math and build confidence in their abilities. Learning coding may even provide some of my students with job opportunities in the future once they leave school.
