I teach in a low-income neighborhood school that was unfortunately in the Hurricane Harvey impact zone. Our community received over 50 inches of water in about a 24 hour period. Many of our students are English language learners which can be challenging. These students benefit from hands-on learning, which helps foster language acquisition and mathematics skills.
Last schoool year, before school started, Hurricane Harvey hit our area and water was in 80-90% of the homes in our town.
My children have very little to begin the school year with. I would like for them to have as normal of a school year as possible. I love teaching these children because they are eager to learn even with all the devastation, they have seen in their little lives.
My Project
This past year was a huge challenge to try and "get back" some of the time that the Hurricane took. I previously was funded with a Scan and Cut machine and paper. This new school year, I will have all the ELL children in my room. Having these English Language Learners will mean that I will need additional materials to specifically target them learning English. This additional paper, laminating supplies and Velcro dots will help me continue to create additional hands-on learning centers to help my children become successful.
I believe in teaching though hands-on learning and these materials will help me create learning centers more effectively and easier than ever before.
I am excited to begin the new school year and to be able to serve my community with the help of donors like you!
