I work at a special education school serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in NYC; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance.
I teach a modified curriculum in all the major subject areas, including Math, English, Science, and Social Studies.
Despite their special learning needs, my students are focused on their studies all year long, and they work diligently to complete requirements for their high school diploma. I have some students who are planning to attend college, and others that will be participating in vocational programs when they graduate.
My Project
I would like to take my students to visit the Crayola Experience. Ever wonder why all Crayola crayons are a little bit hollow? How expansion and contraction help make the perfect crayon? Or what would happen if pigment is not added to a crayon? Students will view a unique lesson that teaches the science of melted wax and the behind-the-scenes magic that turns it into the crayon they know and love.
A day at the Crayola Experience also includes unlimited access to all four floors of hands-on attractions that encourage creative thinking and self-expression. Students will choose from a variety of melted crayon colors to create wax art on paper. Students will load a fresh crayon into the Drip Art machine and watch it melt and drip crayon wax onto their paper as it spins to create a swirly-whirly masterpiece. They can also personalize and print an authentic Crayola crayon label, wrap it around their crayon, and create their own unique Crayola crayon. Many more exhibits abound!
For a typical school trip, parents would be asked to provide funds for their children.
However, most of my students live in poverty, and their families are unable to reach into their own pockets. We strive to provide our students with as many experiences as possible, regardless of their financial situations. Thank you for considering my special students. This would be an amazing hands-on artistic experience!
