My students need pencil sharpeners, clipboards, vis-a-vis markers, a local printer, and other supplies to complete hands-on activities. These materials will be integrated with our existing math lessons to make them interactive and engaging.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things positive by providing hands-on learning opportunities.
They like to problem-solve, they love to explore, and they love working with their hands.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I want them to feel excited about what the day holds. I want them to feel eager to learn and safe to try new things and explore. Hands-on manipulatives are imperative for kids to get a real understanding of math problems and be able to apply them to real world situations.
My Project
These materials will be used continuously all year long. Post-its are great for graphic organizers and collaborative learning. Clipboards allow for movement and flexible seating around the room. Local printers allow for printing and the efficiency of lessons and accessibility to materials.
Many times students need that extra push, engagement, or real life applicability to make the concept stick.
Hands-on manipulatives, such as the ones listed above, are exactly what we need to kick start the idea. So many of these materials are versatile, making the possibilities virtually endless. They can be used in math, language arts, science, and social studies. This not only opens the doors for all subjects, but also allows the teacher to integrate all 4 together. This is so important for that deeper understanding and higher thinking skills.
