This school year, I teach a group of first grade students ages 6 to 7. These students live in an area of Southwest Florida that is often not noticed for accomplishments. My classroom demographic is a majority low-income families as well as immigrants. The students are predominantly Hispanic and are bilingual. By promoting different types of learning, including visual learning, these students will shine. I want to offer as many different types of learning to help my students succeed.
I want my students to have opportunities that promote learning and success.
My Project
We’ve made it through half of the school year and took mid-year testing that showed the skills and strategies my students still need to improve on. These Can Do reading games offer hands on activities for students to work on during centers with the teacher or center group to improve grammar and basic reading skills that will overall improve their reading and comprehension. When students have work that feels more like a game they don’t realize how much they are learning! My students have also asked for an iPad in the classroom to listen to stories and practice reading with help when the teacher is busy.
