Ms. Carson from Louisville KY is requesting lab equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Hands On Activities For Hard To Learn Topics

My students need hands on materials (Chromosome lab kit) that can last from year to year! Also they need quality materials (highlighters, tape, easel paper, etc.) to make transition time in lessons go more smoothly.

My Students

I love teaching biology! Freshmen and sophomores are really trying to learn their way around a high school classroom! Freshmen are kind of wide eyed and curious, and sophomores are a little more, how would you say it, skeptical. I have strong students and weaker students, but I love what I do and try to make an impact on them everyday. Since we are all alive, biology is important to everyone and I try to help them see that. I want their futures to shine!

My Project

There are some biological concepts that are fairly easy to learn. Some are much more difficult and for some reason, meiosis has always been difficult. The Chromosome Simulation Lab will help students with this difficult topic, especially hands on learners. Students will actually get to simulate the meiosis process with this kit that should last from year to year.

Some of my students are great readers, while others have trouble with comprehension.

There will be reading and writing of some content notes about the topic. The highlighters will be used to annotate these notes. (I teach helpful annotation techniques in class.) The tape will be used for permanently placing their notes in the organized science journals each student keeps. The poster sized Post-its will be used to keep a running set of main science ideas on the class wall.
