My students need hands-on experience with coding! These materials will allow their interactions with coding to become concrete. Students love hands-on projects. I want the students to be fully engaged in our lessons!
My students range in age from five to thirteen and attend an urban K-8 elementary school. Each student in our school comes to our lab once a week for their lessons on digital media.
They come from a variety of backgrounds with many different levels of exposure to computers.
Our students are curious to learn more about how to create digital media to share with others. We want them to learn how to create and not just to consume digital media.
My Project
My students are interested in computers and the world around them. Some students are very interested in coding, but others are not sure how coding relates to them.
By interacting with hands on materials, students will be able to fully explore what it means to "code" a computer.
Students will learn that they are the ones who can program the computer (not the other way around). Students of all ages (K to 8) will be able to interact with these various supplies. With Makey Makeys, students can create interactions between everyday items and computers! With Ozobots, students can create paths for robots to follow as they learn about sequencing in coding. The Dash and Dot Robot allow student to use block coding to create programs where the two robots will interact with each other or with the students. The Osmo Kits, Scratch Cards, and Legos will compliment materials that we have in the lab. All students in the school will be able to interact with these materials when they visit the computer lab.
Students will gain confidence (and have so much fun!) when using these materials in their Digital Media Class. I am excited to take their coding skills to the next level. I have selected items for all of the grade bands I work with.
