Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a NYC Teaching Fellow at one of the last remaining large high schools in the Bronx. We have nearly 5000 students in a building designed for a much smaller population. My classes have as many as 34 students. In this crowded situation, technological resources are scarce.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards, which form the basis of NY state and city guidelines, encourage the integration of technology into the mathematics classroom. One very flexible means to do this is with a graphing calculator that has programming capabilities built in. Direct instruction (sometimes called "chalk and talk") doesn't hold the attention of the students, but a graphing calculator not only holds their attention, but helps them to see mathematical connections in ways that helps them gain true insight and understanding into mathematical relationships.
The TI-83+ family of calculators is the standard approved for use on the Regents examinations, and for those trying to continue to college, it is strongly recommended when taking SAT tests. Unfortunately, students who cannot even afford lunch cannot be expected to buy their own calculators. I would like to have a class set of thirty TI-84+ calculators to let my students use during class. This proposal is for ten of the desired thirty (I'm creating two other identical proposals).
Graphing calculator technology truly empowers and motivates my students. It is difficult to elicit excitement about math, but I've seen graphing calculators reinvigorate the students' learning experiences.
