Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students show me everyday how excited they are about reading, and are starving for some new books to select from in the classroom. I would like to encourage this habit, and encourage them to become life-long readers.
As a Special Education teacher in both the resource and inclusive setting, my students consist of 6th and 7th grade students with learning disabilities.
These students come into school everyday with a clear sense of excitement about learning. Our families instill an appreciation for education in their children. Students at our school make up a 99% Hispanic population, with many families that only speak Spanish. Reading can be their gateway to success in our country. Our school offers a very nurturing environment, and I feel motivated and challenged every day by my students to be the best teacher I can be.
My Special Education students need resources readily available for them to continue growing academically, and I'd like to provide them with a strong variety of literature to meet those needs.
My Project
As a new teacher at the school, I came into an empty classroom. Although I have made the most out of few resources, I have noticed an interest in discovering new book series and materials. My students would benefit from more books readily available so that when it's time for independent reading, they know they can always find something exciting to delve into. My students are curious by nature, and have showed an interest in learning more about different animals, sports, science topics, and even mythology. I have selected books to meet that need. I have also noticed how much my students enjoy reading books together which is why I would like multiple copies of a few books. As for the struggling students in the class, I have selected more low-level high-interest books and graphic novels.
Lastly, I am in need of a document camera. Students with Learning Disabilities need explicit and scaffolded instruction, and the document camera and projector would allow me to model skills for them.
The littlest enhancements to a classroom environment can make an immense difference in any child's life.
By donating to my project, my students will more readily be able to continue their journey as life long readers. I will also be more able to address the wide range of learning differences in the classroom. Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to providing my students with the supports and resources they want and need.
