Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a fifth-year teacher, and high school teacher, I am beyond excited to work with young adults. In 11th grade, aside from academics, team building, leadership skills, and classroom culture are my top priorities. This year looks a little different. We are distance learning, and so I hope to build classroom culture a bit more in depth this year, but especially with my advisory classes. Advisory is a class meant to build, foster and promote relationships with students, who are not necessarily your own.
Working at a low-income school has its difficulties, but seeing the students every day is the reason I am there.
I am motivated to sign on every day to work with them on their academic and social skills. I know that if I had enough resources, I would be able to give my students opportunities to work on themselves, work together, and build community despite the distance between us. My students are in need of at home resources so they can learn to manage their time, create healthy routines and learn to work on themselves during quarantine.
My Project
Working with students online during this pandemic has not been easy. Students have progressively lost their motivation and many students are missing the social interaction and recognition that school provides.
Through this project, I am hoping to gift students with handmade crafts, such as personalized mugs, to recognize students' efforts over the last several months.
This personal touch, I hope, will help bridge the gap between distance learning and the social-emotional well-being of the students. I feel that now, more than ever, students should feel special and be recognized for their participation in online learning.
